Most likely an ‘also ran’ hiding in the shadow of Tropical Storm Leslie we do have another named system in the Atlantic, unlikely to deliver meaningful swell particularly given the glut on offer from his big sister.
The chart below shows a developing TS Michael. He’s the little red dot to the right of the very big red blob, his big sister Leslie. While the NHC’s latest guidance does show about even odds of the storm becoming a small hurricane you can see from the image that even this is unlikely to make much difference to the outlook for surf on affected coasts given the proximity of a much larger system.

Interestingly the long range atmospheric models are seeing another substantial storm forming in the next week or so – nothing concrete of course at this range but it certainly looks like we’re game on for Hurricane season 2012.
